March in the Central Valley means one thing for thousands of local families: spring sports season is officially underway. From Galt Youth Baseball and Softball leagues to soccer fields across Elk Grove and youth lacrosse programs in Dixon, kids throughout Sacramento County are gearing up for months of practices, games, and tournaments. While parents dutifully pack water bottles, sunscreen, and snacks, there’s one essential piece of equipment that often gets overlooked—and it could save your child from a painful dental emergency.

At DNTL Hub, we see the aftermath of sports-related dental injuries every spring. The good news? Most of these injuries are entirely preventable with proper preparation and quick action when accidents do occur.

The Sobering Statistics Every Sports Parent Should Know

Dental injuries are among the most common injuries in youth sports, yet they receive far less attention than concussions or broken bones. Studies show that athletes who don’t wear mouthguards are 60 times more likely to experience dental trauma. Each year, more than five million teeth are knocked out in the United States, with a significant percentage occurring during athletic activities.

Contact sports like baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer carry the highest risk. A stray elbow during a basketball game, a collision at second base, or even a fall during soccer practice can result in chipped, cracked, or completely knocked-out teeth. For growing children, damage to permanent teeth can affect jaw development, require years of corrective treatment, and cost thousands of dollars in dental procedures.

Why Mouthguards Matter More Than You Think

Mouthguards are the single most effective way to prevent sports-related dental injuries. They absorb and distribute the force of impact, protecting teeth, lips, cheeks, tongue, and jaw. Despite their proven effectiveness, studies suggest that fewer than half of young athletes consistently wear mouthguards during practice and competition.

Many parents assume mouthguards are only necessary for football or hockey. In reality, dental professionals recommend mouthguards for any sport involving potential contact, falls, or flying objects—including baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, and martial arts.

Understanding Your Mouthguard Options

Not all mouthguards provide the same level of protection. Understanding the differences helps parents make informed decisions about their child’s safety.

  • Stock Mouthguards: These pre-formed guards are available at most sporting goods stores and offer the lowest cost option. However, they cannot be adjusted to fit individual mouths, which often makes them bulky and uncomfortable. Children frequently remove them during play because they interfere with breathing and speaking. While better than nothing, stock mouthguards provide minimal protection.
  • Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: A step up from stock guards, these are softened in hot water and then molded to the child’s teeth by biting down. They offer improved fit and protection at a moderate price point. For many families, boil-and-bite guards represent a reasonable balance between cost and effectiveness.
  • Custom-Fitted Mouthguards: Created from precise impressions of your child’s teeth, custom mouthguards from your dentist provide the best fit, comfort, and protection. Because they’re designed specifically for each patient, children are far more likely to actually wear them consistently. Custom guards also allow for normal breathing and speaking, addressing the main complaints children have about mouthguards.

At DNTL Hub, Dr. Devan Dalla and our team can create custom-fitted mouthguards that provide superior protection while remaining comfortable enough for your young athlete to wear throughout every practice and game. Given that children’s mouths change as they grow, we recommend having mouthguards evaluated and potentially replaced each season.

When Dental Emergencies Happen on the Field

Despite best precautions, accidents happen. Knowing how to respond in the critical minutes following a dental injury can mean the difference between saving and losing a permanent tooth.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Time is critical. If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, there’s approximately a 30-minute window for successful reimplantation. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part you normally see), never the root. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline solution—never scrub it or use tap water, which can damage the delicate root cells. If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and have the child bite down gently on a clean cloth to hold it in place. If reimplantation isn’t possible, store the tooth in milk or have the child hold it inside their cheek (if they’re old enough not to swallow it) and get to a dentist immediately.
  • Chipped or Cracked Tooth: Rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area. Apply a cold compress to the face to reduce swelling. Save any tooth fragments if possible—dentists can sometimes reattach them. Even minor chips should be evaluated promptly, as cracks can extend below the visible surface and cause complications if left untreated.
  • Tooth Pushed Out of Position: Don’t attempt to move the tooth back. Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth if there’s bleeding. Contact your dentist immediately, as repositioning requires professional care.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Apply firm pressure with clean gauze to cuts on lips, tongue, or cheeks. If bleeding doesn’t stop within 15-20 minutes or the cut appears deep, seek medical attention.

Preparing for Spring Sports Season

Before the first pitch or kickoff, take these steps to protect your child’s smile:

  • Schedule a Pre-Season Dental Checkup: Existing dental problems like cavities or weakened teeth are more vulnerable to sports injuries. A checkup allows your dentist to address issues before they become emergencies.
  • Invest in Proper Protection: Consider custom-fitted mouthguards for the best combination of protection and compliance. At minimum, ensure your child has a quality boil-and-bite guard that fits properly.
  • Create an Emergency Kit: Include gauze, a small container with lid (for storing a knocked-out tooth in milk), your dentist’s emergency contact information, and a cold pack.
  • Educate Your Child: Children who understand the importance of protection are more likely to actually wear their mouthguards consistently.
